How To Prepare A Water-Damaged House For Professional Cleaners

Felecia Coleman

If your house has been damaged by water to the point where you have called professionals like Ringstad Carpet Cleaning & Restoration to come in to clean and make repairs, you may feel like the situation is out of your hands. However, there are some things you can do before the cleaners even arrive to help expedite the process, which can also reduce the possibility and severity of long-term damage. Much of this involves making the premises safe and preparing the area so the cleaners can access it more easily.

Stop The Flood Source and Remove Water

If possible, do your best to stop the source of the water flow. If you have an internal plumbing leak, the fastest way to do this is to shut off water to your house. You can call for a plumber to fix this problem quickly or leave the water off. Cleaners can remove water, but they may not be able to stop the source.

When the flow of water has stopped, try to get as much standing water out of your house as possible. Avoid using vacuum cleaners, fans or other electrical equipment before the damage has been assessed; instead, use brooms to sweep the water out. You don't need to worry about drying everything, as the cleaners will be able to do that with better tools.

Prevent Safety Hazards

The biggest possible hazard after a flood is electrical. Not only is water a powerful conductor, but water getting into all your circuits can make it very easy for an electrical problem to occur. Go to your circuit panel and shut off the electricity to your house. Before the cleaners get to work, you may need to hire the services of an electrician to make sure everything is up and running safely; it may be difficult for the cleaners to use their tools otherwise.

Clear Off Your Carpet

When water-damaged furniture and other items sit on the carpet, there's a chance the carpet could get stained. Since the carpet will need to be dried and cleaned anyway, move everything off of all carpeted areas; this both protects the carpet from being stained and saves the cleaners some work.

If possible, keep everything that you're moving indoors and move it to a flat surface like tile, wood or concrete. Direct sunlight might seem like it would help dry your items off faster, but it can actually be harmful; for example, when wood dries too quickly, it can warp and crack.

Pin And Hang Up Your Items

When you've finished moving everything you can, try to prevent as many things as possible from touching the floor. If any of your furniture has skirts, pin them up so they don't touch the floor. Hang curtains up so that they don't touch the floor or walls, especially if they're already wet.

Open Up Your House

If your house is closed up, this can hold in a lot of humidity. Apart from making it harder to dry out, this also welcomes mold. If possible, keep your doors and windows open to help air out the house. The cleaners will have equipment to help restore humidity levels and dry things out, but it's best to start this process as soon as possible.
