Watch These 3 Areas For Signs Of Mold Damage After A Flood

Felecia Coleman

While no one expects their home to be overcome by flood water, it can happen at any point in time. Whether it is a natural disaster that struck the area or a water pipe that burst in your home, flooding can cause a significant amount of damage. The key is getting the issue resolved as quickly as you can to minimize its effects. If left untreated, mold will begin growing and quickly spread throughout your property. Here are some of the commonly affected areas and what you need to do to address the situation.

Carpeting

If the carpeting ended up getting wet in your home, you need to get it out of there as quickly as possible. Padding takes a tremendous amount of time to dry once it is saturated. Before long the padding will begin to smell and mold will start growing.

Drywall

Rooms with flooding will start showing signs of mold growing on the walls. If the drywall ended up getting soaked, you have to cut out the bottom portions of the drywall up to a point at least a foot above where the drywall was saturated. Anytime mold starts growing on your walls, you need to cut that part of the wall out as soon as possible. Unfortunately, you cannot simply clean mold off of the drywall like you might be able to other surfaces. Make sure to dispose of the drywall right away to prevent the pores from staying in your home.

Wood and Other Building Materials

If you have wood paneling that ended up getting wet from the flooding, you will want to get it removed as well. Wood is often fine to use once it has the chance to dry out, providing there is no mold damage present.

Insulation, on the other hand, should be thrown away. It takes far too long for it to dry out. While you need to remove all of the building materials that got wet from the flood, you want to make sure your home is completely dry before you have any new materials installed. Don't seal the walls up until after they have dried out completely.

The best thing you can do is call upon a professional mold remediation company to come out and assess the damage as quickly as possible. In doing so, you can salvage your home and prevent the spread of mold by approaching it from the right direction.
