The Dos and Don'ts of Keeping Hardwood Floors Clean

Felecia Coleman

Hardwood floors can look incredible in a home. However, they are a little harder to maintain than most types of flooring. You can't just scrub them clean and hope for the best. In fact, there are quite a few dos and don'ts to adhere to as you clean and care for your hardwood floors.

Do: Sweep or vacuum often.

A little fine dust and dirt on your floor may not look like much. But it can cause friction against the floor, wearing away the finish over time. If the finish becomes worn and pitted, your floor will start to look dull. So try to vacuum or sweep your hardwood floor at least two or three times per week, if not daily.

Don't: Use the brush on your vacuum.

If you choose to vacuum your floors rather than sweeping them, make sure you don't use the brush on your vacuum. The brush could abrade away the finish and leave it dull. Most vacuums have a "hard floor" setting, which is what you should use.

Do: Use a dedicated hardwood floor cleaner.

If you dust or vacuum often, you should only have to thoroughly clean the hardwood floor once a month or so. When you do, make sure you use a cleaner made specifically for hardwood floors. These cleaners are designed not to damage the floor finish as they lift dirt and debris. They also tend to impart a little moisture into the floor, which can help keep your floor from getting overly dry and cracked over the years.

Don't: Scrub.

If there is some stuck-on grime on your floor, don't scrub it! Instead, apply some of your floor cleaner, and let it sit for a minute or two to loosen the grime. Then you should be able to wipe it away without scuffing up the wood.

Do: Ensure air circulation after washing the floor.

After you wash the floor, turn on your ceiling fan, open the windows, and open doors leading into the room. These steps will all help increase airflow through the space so the floor dries faster. You don't want the floor to stay wet for longer than necessary as this could contribute to warping and finish damage.

Adhere to these dos and don'ts, and you'll be taking better care of your hardwood floor. Most floors can stay looking like new for decades as long as you care for them appropriately. For more information, contact a local hardwood cleaning service, such as Leo's Holland Floor Maintenance.
